What is a TSCM investigation (bug sweep)?

A Technical Surveillance Countermeasure (TSCM)(Debugging) investigation is also known as a bug sweep. It is the systematic physical and electronic examination of a designated area in an effort to locate electronic eavesdropping devices or other ways in which personal or proprietary information is compromised.

One indicator is when information, which has been discussed in confidence with a very limited number of people, becomes public knowledge.

Here are some other issues that should cause concern that you are being bugged:

  • Confidential Information becomes common knowledge
  • You experience a break-in and nothing appears to be taken
  • Debris or dry-wall powder is observed on the floor or furniture
  • Wall plate covers for telephone, switches, and outlets appear to have been moved or jarred
  • You notice unusual tones or sounds (static or scratching) on the telephone
  • You notice changes in the volume or line quality on the telephone
  • You can hear sounds from the telephone when it is hung up
  • Your telephone rings and no one is there or there is a beep or a tone
  • People seem to know about your personal and business activities when they shouldn't
  • Your door locks suddenly don't feel right or have unusual marks on them
  • You notice furniture has been moved, and no one knows why or who moved it
  • Service or delivery trucks are often parked nearby and you don't see anyone in them
